The police your friend and helper, the police are often called. But what kind of tasks does the police have and how is it organized?
The state police
In principle, the POLICE does not exist in Germany. Here our state form is noticeable in the police, so we distinguish between the state police and the federal police. The local police force is the local police. The federal states are solely responsible for their organization, their organization, training and payment. They also decide the strengths of the police. The fact that this is so has often been heard in political campaigns, where the number of redundancies and new appointments is an issue. The state police are responsible for police security. Depending on the state, it is divided into a large number of areas. This includes, for example, the criminal police, who are involved in serious crimes such as murder, robbery, but also in the case of arson. The police on the ground and is usually the first point of contact for the citizens. The traffic police will act in the event of traffic accidents and traffic education. Then there are special areas such as the highway police, whose responsibility is limited exclusively to the highway. At the head of a state police is the Landeskriminalamt. The National Criminal Police Office supports local police stations, but is also responsible for serious crimes or special offenses, for example against politicians. Again, there are subdivisions such as the state protection. In addition, the National Criminal Police Office is also responsible for personal protection. Thus, the protection of the state ministers and the prime minister falls into the scope of the state criminal police. For training, equipment and large-scale operations, the countries maintain appropriate facilities and units.
Legal regulation of the state police
As you can see from this list, is a national police with many responsibilities. Although you always pay attention here, there are big differences between the federal states. To illustrate this with an example, in Berlin there is the object police. In the office "Central property protection" of the police, one is exclusively with the protection of the real estates of the country, but also of the federation as well as generally endangered objects. In Berlin, for example, this can be messages from other countries. These differences are evident not only in the organization, but also in the equipment, for example. The state minister of a state supervises the state police. The already mentioned autonomy in training, organization and remuneration is regulated in the respective federal states in their own national police laws and regulations.
This is the federal police
As mentioned in the introduction, one distinguishes between the state and the federal police. The federal police have a very restricted field of activity compared to the state police. For instance, the Federal Police are responsible for the protection and prosecution of airports, railway stations, as well as for the real estate of the federal government. Of course, the federal police also supports the state police officers in the prosecution, for example, through investigation procedures or techniques which are not available to them. Also, the federal police is concerned with the transnational crime, which of course this does not stop at the national borders of the federal states within Germany. In addition to these areas, the area of responsibility of the Federal Police also includes border protection in cooperation with customs, but also personal protection for members of the Federal Government. The organization, the number of police forces, the equipment differs from the federal states and is governed by its own laws and regulations. The Federal Ministry of the Interior is responsible for overseeing the Federal Police.
Special forms of police in Germany
With these two forms of state and federal police there are still special forms. These special forms include the Voluntary Police Service and the City Police. There are, or were, voluntary police services in some federal states. One example is Baden-Württemberg, although the voluntary police service has now been abolished. These are citizens who are volunteers as police officers. They have a graduated education, are armed and should support and relieve the regular police forces in the police service. Another form is the city police. Anyone who runs or drives through Frankfurt on the Main, will surely be noticed by patrol cars with bluish and the inscription "Stadtpolizei". What many citizens do not even know, every municipality in Germany issues police regulations and statutes. To what extent is always dependent on the state and the regulation there. Typical regulations are, for example, parking spaces and parking bans. The municipality is solely responsible for compliance with these police regulations and statutes. For example, the city police in Frankfurt is responsible for compliance with the police regulations and statutes, but is also intended to increase the sense of security in the city by means of occupancy. And there is another special form of the police in Germany, namely the Bundestag. The German Bundestag has its own police. This is responsible for the protection of members of parliament and staff, but also for guests and visitors as well as for law enforcement. The Bundestag president is a service provider to the police from the Bundestag.
